What is trail?

『“Trail” is walking road where you can enjoy “walking while getting close to nature” such as mountain trails and nature trails, and long trail is trail of long distance. This trail course was established in the area of the San'in Kaigan Geopark, which has been designated as UNESCO Global Geopark, and the trail is named "San'in Kaigan Geopark Trail". In recent years, health consciousness has increased, and long trails are becoming more popular as part of the activities of people who want to get in touch with nature. Introducing such trail routes and improving safety management of them are being promoted not only in the San'in Kaigan but also in many areas throughout Japan. For enjoying the long trail more, the special pages introduce you the features of the course, the nearest public transportation, shops along the course, gourmet information, etc. Please use it to collect information in advance.

What are the characteristics of the San'in Kaigan Geopark Trail?

A major feature of this course is the never-ending landscape that you never get tired with, so that you can walk all the way while enjoying the scenery of the San'in Kaigan Geopark. Because it is, of course, “mostly composed of the natural trail", that is characteristic of the long trail, you can fully enjoy not only the rich nature but also the scenery of the fishing village nurtured in the Sea of Japan and the traditional scenery of the coast of the Sea of Japan such as history and culture. The extremely luxurious course, where you can see the Sea of Japan while walking in the mountains, will give you an impression that will make you forget your tiredness. This site introduces 27 courses. The difficulty level for each course is determined by the geopark staff when walking, but it depends on the physical strength and experience of each person, so please use it as an index. For families with young children and those who are not confident in their physical fitness, start with courses of low difficulty. The difficult course has ups and downs and log bridges, so you can feel adventurous. The features of each course are also posted on this site. Please use it for the preliminary confirmation.

Manners & Rules/ Established on September 4, 2015

■ Basic rule

The trail route runs through San'in Kaigan Geopark and San'in Kaigan National Park. In order to protect the beautiful landscape and rich ecosystem, we protect animals and plants and avoid collecting rocks and minerals.

■ Basic Manner

1:Take back home all the trash

Plastic, metal, paper, vinyl, etc., as well as simmered and leftover food, should be taken home without being thrown away or buried. Cigarette bud, also, should be brought back.

2:For toilets, toilet facilities or portable toilets should be used.

3:Give consideration to residents, other tourists, hikers, etc.

Consideration to other hikers and residents should be given, so that everyone can enjoy this trail comfortably. Also, when walking, of course, do not use annoying parking or enter private land without permission at the trail entrance, villages, around agriculture land, etc.

4:Gather information in advance and avoid unreasonable trekking.

1:A part of Tottori Sand Dunes Rule

Please note the followings based on the "Ordinance for Protecting and Raising the Tottori Sand Dunes of No.1 in Japan" and the "Natural Parks Act".

・Do not bring out the sand.
・Do not drive in cars, motorcycles, etc.
・Do not scribble, such as drawing letters or pictures on the slopes of dunes, etc.
・Do not let go of your pet and do not throw away your pet's droppings.
・Do not throw away the trash.
・Fireworks are prohibited.
・Do not camp outside the campsite.
・Do not post or install advertising materials such as signboards and banners.
・Do not swim in the dunes.
・Do not perform any actions that may be annoying or dangerous to other visitors, such as leaving golf.

2:“Shirawara Kaigan Coast” and “Kamogaiso Kaigan Coast” of Uradome Kaigan Coast

The following rules are observed at Shirawara Kaigan Coast and Kamogaiso Kaigan Coast.

・Do not throw away trash and charcoal, but take them home.
・Barbecue and bonfire are prohibited.
・We do not stay in tents.

※By violation of the above, you may be charged violating the Waste Disposal and Public Cleansing Law, the Natural Parks Act, and the Iwami Town Camping Prohibition Ordinance.

3:There are designated places for lodging

※The only campsites on the trail route are "Yanagijaya Campsite (open all year round, near Tottori Sand Dunes)" and "Makidani Campsite (summer only, Iwami Town Makidani)". Accommodation in tents is not possible in other areas. Please use accommodation facilities such as guest houses and hotels.

4:Be careful not to damage the ruins and cultural properties.

■ Notes

1:Be careful for the natural trails on the Uradome coast. They are slippery when it rains.

2:There are some areas of rocks are exposed and steep slopes on the trail course. Please be careful about falling rocks.

3:There are also some places on the trail course with car traffics. Be careful for vehicles when crossing road.

4:Please note that wild animals such as wasps, snakes, and wild boars may appear in some places.

5:There was information about bears appearing in the section between Manidera Temple (Kakuji, Tottori City) and Tottori Castle Ruins, so please be careful when walking, such as by bringing a bell with you

6:The beaches on the coast move from time to time due to erosion, etc., and erosion may progress and some parts of the beach may disappear. In that case, it may be dangerous to go along the coast, so please take a safe way to go such as detouring.
