Geological HeritageKyotango City

Mt. Isanago Area

This Geosite spreads over hills and mountains of granite from the era when the Japanese Archipelago was part of the continent. Weathered granite rocks dissolve into sand, which becomes eroded more easily. The eroded hills become rounder in shape, and fertile plains are formed among the valleys. People have grown rice on these plains. Here you can enjoy the landscape of rural forests from olden times.

(1)Mt. Isanago
Mt. Isanago (elevation: 661 meters) appears in the legend of the Robe of Feathers. Near the mountain lies Meike Pond. The legend says that heavenly maidens bathed in this pond. There is also Otome Shrine, where one of the heavenly maidens is honored.

(2)Mt. Koryujigadake
From the top of Mt. Koryujigadake (elevation: 697m), you can see as far as the Sea of Japan.

(3)Otome Shrine
It is believed that this shrine was built to honor one of the heavenly maidens in the legend of the Robe of Feathers. It is believed that if you visit and pray at this shrine, you will have a beautiful daughter. In the Oji District at the foot of the mountain, people still celebrate the traditional Tanabata Festival from olden times.

Tanabata Festival (Aug. 6)
An ancestor of the Adachi Family, who live in this district, is believed to have married a heavenly maiden. People in the neighborhood gather to celebrate the Tanabata Festival on the evening of August 6 (July 6 in the Old Japanese Calendar), the eve of the day of Tanabata.
