Lower Maruyama River and the surrounding rice paddies were registered as a wetland of the Ramsar Convention in 2012, because the place is globally important to sustain various creatures including Oriental White Storks. The importance of citizen’s continuous efforts is appreciated because these rice fields and marshland have been maintained and reproduced by the persistent efforts of the citizens. The surrounding area is a habitat for a wide variety of birds including oriental white storks.
(1)Toshima Marsh
The area was used for rice farming though deep swamp of 1m depth. It was called as “bride killing rice paddies” because agricultural machines couldn’t be used. The City purchased the land to convert into the marshland park after it was submerged by a typhoon in 2005.
(2)Tai Marsh
The Tai district minimized the damage during the North Tajima Earthquake, so that Dr. Imamura of the University of Tokyo at that time propagated the town as a model of disaster prevention. The town had a relationship with the University of Tokyo because of the event.

Various events are held such as a talk about Oriental White Storks and visiting the off-limit wetland where people cannot usually go.
