Beech trees usually dominate the grounds of places of high elevation, but you can find beech forests at various places of moderate elevation in the mountainous areas of the Tango Peninsula and other parts of Hyogo and Tottori Prefectures. It is believed that the heavy snowfall brought by winter winds from the Sea of Japan is one of the factors that led to the growth of the beech forests. Other trees cannot grow straight in areas of heavy snowfall, because they are not strong enough to withstand the pressure of the snow. However, beech trees are strong enough to withstand the pressure, and dominate the grounds of areas of heavy snowfall.

Guide Recommend
Once called Ikari Sen Ken (meaning “Ikari’s thousand houses”), the Ikari Highlands used to be home to many residential houses. However, after the heavy snowfall in 1963, many residents left the Ikari Highlands. Today, there is an 88-hectare ranch (Ikari Highlands Ranch) on the 400-meter high plateau overlooking the Sea of Japan. There are many facilities here including an animal farm where you can pet animals, tennis courts, a camp site, a cottage site, an observatory, and excursion paths. Many families visit the ranch to enjoy the idyllic landscape and play with animals. The Swiss Village is located near the Ikari Highlands Ranch.
